Frequently Asked Questions about the Construction of the Ed Roberts Campus (ERC)

What is the ERC’s construction schedule?

Construction of the Ed Roberts Campus is scheduled to start mid-August and is planned to open 18-months later in Spring 2010. As a first step, BART will close the East parking lot and the eastern entrance to the station on August 18th.

When will construction take place?

Construction will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Monday – Friday, and between 9:00 a.m. and noon on Saturday. No construction related activity will take place on Sunday.

What about noise and dust during construction?

The ERC will work closely with our contractors to minimize the amount of noise and dust from construction. In addition, we plan to provide early notification when disruption is unavoidable. Sign up for regular email construction updates.

Where will BART patrons park during construction?

The ERC has hired a professional parking operator to manage an attendant assisted parking program in Ashby BART's west parking lots on weekdays from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm. After the self-park stalls are filled, vehicles will be parked by the attendants in the lot aisles. Parking will be available on Adeline Street at all times, except between 2 - 5 AM. Carshare vehicle parking will also be relocated to the west parking lot during construction.

How will the ERC communicate with neighbors during construction?

Neighbors will have several ways to stay informed including the ERC website, emails, and flyers. Sign up for regular email construction updates.

How will the ERC improve access and safety around the Ashby BART Station?

The construction of the ERC includes millions of dollars of transit access and safety improvements to the area surrounding the Ashby BART Station. For example,

  • Access from Adeline Street to BART will be improved with a new public elevator and staircase with bike channels.

  • Access from Tremont Street to BART will be improved with a new ramp and staircase leading to a well-lit and landscaped pedestrian pathway through a reconstructed BART parking lot that will be level with Adeline Street. The existing terraced lot is unsafe and difficult for police to patrol.

  • Along Adeline Street there will be a new pedestrian plaza, bus/paratransit waiting area and transit information kiosk, as well as new pedestrian-scale lighting and street trees.

  • Crossing Adeline Street will be safer with a new crosswalk with in-pavement lights and bulb-outs to slow traffic, bollards with audible pedestrian signals, and a median refuge.
