Mission and History

The World Institute on Disability is a non-profit public policy center dedicated to the promotion of independence and full inclusion in society of people with disabilities. Founded in 1983 by leaders of the Independent Living/Civil Rights Movement for people with disabilities, WID is committed to bringing policy into action.

Over the past 15 years, WID has earned an excellent reputation for high quality research and public education on a wide range of issues that impact people with disabilities.

Program

WID works on policy and research in a number of areas including personal assistance services, employment, leadership, women with disabilities, self-sufficiency, technology access, and disability services. WID has developed close relationships with many organizations, universities, research institutes, and federal and state government agencies and much of their work is collaborative.

Key People

WID's Board and staff include experts in the fields of public policy, research, law, non-profit management, education, training, development, and business. Over half of the Board and staff are people with disabilities. This enables WID to bring a cross-disability perspective to the policy arena. Executive Director Kathy Martinez is an internationally known disability activitst who has created innovative programs focusing on the areas of gender and underserved populations within the disability community.
